Getting our heads together for Woolly Hat Day 2018

Individuals from St Mungo’s Hackney services and MIND Hackney came together in January for a workshop to design and decorate woolly hats, flexing all their creativity and collaborative skills to create some funky winter head warmers!

The workshop was inspired by St Mungo’s flagship fundraising event ‘Woolly Hat Day’, or #WHD18, held this year on 26 January. The session enabled participants in City and Hackney Time Credits to contribute their time and support the cause. City and Hackney Time Credits is a programme designed to improve health outcomes for people affected by, or at risk of, homelessness.

A total of 32 woolly hats were successfully decorated over the course of the afternoon – under the motivational guidance of volunteer tutor Pabllo De La Cruz, an East London resident and Vogue magazine featured artist, who creates his own hat designs using various concepts of art, pop culture and fashion.

The participants in the two hour workshop earned two Time Credits for their time, and a couple of the volunteers gave this feedback:

“It was my first time volunteering and it was GREAT. I found it fun and relaxing, I LOVE it! It felt really positive to being able to help other people(…) I wasn’t expecting anything in return but I now have earned my first Time Credits and I am excited to spend them to go to the theatre.”

‘I enjoy working and being with people. I used to volunteer, but that was a really long time ago’

Many of the workshop participants said that they intend to spend their Time Credits on upcoming group trips to Kew Gardens and The Musical at Hackney Empire.

How you can get involved

We have set up a Woolly Hat Day 2018 fundraising page on behalf of our lovely volunteer designers, with a selection of the woolly hats available to anyone that donates a minimum of £5.

Beth Norden, St Mungo’s Community and Events Manager, said:

“Many thanks indeed to the Time Credits volunteers and team, and to Pabllo, for their wonderful woolly hat creations. The aim of Woolly Hat Day is to encourage people to get their heads together to help end homelessness. We aim to involve clients in everything we do so we’re especially grateful to our clients for taking part and helping to transform the lives of others.

You can also get involved by putting on your favourite hat, taking a hat selfie and donating to St Mungo’s to help change someone’s life. See
