The Venue, Lache: Attracting and Retaining Volunteers

The Lache Community Development Trust is a well established charity which provides services for people in Lache and the wider area.

Each Monday they run activities for older people (60+ Club) at Lache Community Centre. They pride themselves on their friendly inclusive approach and welcome any older people who would benefit from socialising and enjoying stimulating activities which are beneficial for health and well-being.

Volunteers can earn Time Credits at the centre for the following activities:

  • Kitchen Duties
  • DIY and Maintenance Work
  • Running Events and Activities

Time Credits can be spent on a number including:

  • Meeting Room Hire
  • Kids Parties
  • Laundrette
  • Gym Access

“Time Credits are keeping people coming back for more! It’s great because the volunteers are here more and becoming part of the team.” says Centre Manager, Sharon.

“It’s definitely made local residents more aware of what we offer. It’s meant that people are coming back into the building to use the space where they otherwise wouldn’t have done and therefore generally spending more time in the building, which is what we want.

Volunteers have also given their Time Credits to family and friends who have then spent them here. While this is challenging because of pressure on income, it’s good that new residents are coming into the building.”

I think it also makes people feel like we really appreciate their volunteering because we are giving people access to our services in exchange for their time.

“There was a lady recently who was helping out and I said to her, “look, you can use your Time Credits here.” It’s a nice thing to be able to tell people. Time Credits have definitely brought a really positive feeling.”
