Spice appoints new Chair of Trustees

Spice is pleased to announce that Ruth Sutherland, CEO of Samaritans, has been appointed Chair of the Spice Board of Trustees. Ruth Sutherland takes up the position from Will Norman, who steps down from the role this summer.

Prior to her role at the Samaritans, Ruth was CEO of Relate, and her previous experience includes senior executive leadership roles at Rethink, Alzheimer’s Society and Scope.

Ruth is also Co-Chair of the National Suicide Prevention Alliance, and a volunteer at the Bexley and Dartford branch of Samaritans. She has been a Trustee of the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts since November 2015.

Speaking about her appointment, Ruth Sutherland said:

“Time Credits is an incredibly exciting initiative that has been proven to help many people find ways of contributing to their community, and improve their own health in the process. I am delighted to have been selected as Chair, and look forward to working closely with the team to achieve even greater success.”

Also joining the Spice Board of Trustees is Anna Lewis, a consultant with almost twenty years experience working in NHS mental health and social care. Anna runs a portfolio of health-related roles, including a consultancy practice and senior consultant work for Implementing Recovery through Organisational Change (ImROC.) Anna brings expertise in assets-based approaches to recovery and leadership, rooted in the values of co-production, citizenship and community development.

Alongside her professional roles, Anna fulfils a number of voluntary roles in her community in Carmarthenshire, including as a Bevan Advocate with her local Health Board, and has recently become involved with West Wales Action for Mental Health.

Anna Lewis has been a keen supporter of Spice prior to joining our Board. She said:

The opportunity to contribute to an organisation whose role is to nurture what is good in communities is irresistible. Working alongside people where they live, work and play, Spice is achieving enviable outcomes, using Time Credits in ways that are practical, meaningful, innovative and sustainable. I can’t wait to work with my new colleagues to spread this success even further, while honouring Spice’s origins in its home (and mine) in Wales.

Ian Merrill, Spice CEO, commented on the appointments:

We heartily welcome both Ruth and Anna to our Board of Trustees. Each brings a wealth of experience and knowledge that will prove invaluable to our team and support us through an exciting period of development for Spice.”
