The Spice Wales team had a great reason to celebrate recently, after being named overall winner of the Health & Social Care category in the prestigious Social Business Wales Awards 2017. The Awards were founded to recognise the ‘most dynamic, entrepreneurial and ambitious social enterprises in Wales.’
Another very exciting piece of news has followed up – as a result of this win, Spice is now a finalist in the same category in the 2017 Social Enterprise UK Awards! The winner is due to be announced at their awards ceremony on 23 November.
“We are extremely proud of this achievement,” says Spice CEO Ian Merrill. “Our work in health and social care is an extremely important part of what we do, supporting our overall aim to build opportunities for everyone to get involved in their community, regardless of abilities or life circumstances.”
The Social Business Wales Award acknowledges the innovative work that Spice is undertaking in relation to the integration of Time Credits in two distinct health and social care settings.
Working with Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, our South East Wales Time Credits programme is embedded in the substance use services in the Cardiff and Vale region. Individuals accessing these services earn and spend Time Credits in ways that supports their recovery and shapes the service itself to be more effective.

The Award also recognises our social prescribing programme in Llanelli, where we are working in partnership with nine GP surgeries to prescribe Time Credits to selected individuals. Patients and community members are encouraged to explore the benefits of spending Time Credits, doing activities that are fun and healthy for them, before pledging their time to earn Time Credits in the future.
